TLDR: Sharing powerful biblical financial advice for Christian couples on home buying without debt, inspired by Dave Ramsey’s Financial Peace University principles. Learn how Kingdom Family Leaders can guide young couples toward financial freedom through wise home purchasing decisions that honor God.

What?
I noticed my highest-ranked YouTube videos were about personal finance, which isn’t surprising since my wife and I have taught Financial Peace University several times. These principles have made a huge difference in our family finances. My favorite story involves a young, engaged couple who attended our class. After learning Dave Ramsey’s unconventional advice about buying a house outright instead of taking a mortgage, they were astounded and asked if they should really follow this approach. I explained that my first house cost $46,000, and though I wasn’t the model example, they absolutely could and should follow this debt-free approach as a young couple starting their marriage journey.

Why?
I’m sharing this because as Kingdom Family Leaders, we need to guide others toward financial decisions that align with God’s principles rather than worldly expectations. There’s tremendous pressure on young couples to buy a home immediately after marriage, but that’s the world’s plan, not God’s plan. Scripture isn’t particularly supportive of borrowing and lending money, so we should help young couples resist cultural pressure and make financial decisions that honor God’s wisdom.

Lesson
Dave Ramsey’s primary teaching is to save aggressively and buy a small starter home with cash, then gradually upgrade as you continue saving. His backup plan, if you can’t follow the direct approach, is to make at least a 20% down payment and choose a short mortgage term (10-15 years) that you pay off as quickly as possible. The key lesson is that contrary to popular belief, young couples don’t need to immediately purchase a home with a traditional 30-year mortgage. There are more financially sound, God-honoring alternatives that lead to true financial peace.

Apply
As a Kingdom Family Leader, consider what advice you would give to a young couple about purchasing their first home. Would you encourage them to follow cultural expectations or guide them toward biblical financial wisdom? Take time to evaluate your own financial principles and how they align with Scripture. Then be prepared to mentor others by sharing wisdom that leads to financial freedom rather than debt bondage.

You be blessed!
