Top o’ the Mornin’ to Ya!
A powerful lesson in effective communication emerged today through a touching moment with my 9-year-old son Spencer. While working in my office, I fell into a common leadership trap – trying to communicate multiple messages simultaneously while prioritizing efficiency over effectiveness.
When Spencer spoke to me, I was caught between finishing work, preparing for a podcast, and wanting to listen to him. Instead of choosing what mattered most – my son – I attempted to communicate three messages at once. The result? Spencer walked away, receiving only one clear message: “You’re not listening to me.”
This moment reveals a crucial truth for Kingdom leaders: We must choose effectiveness over efficiency when it comes to relationships. People aren’t “things” to be managed – they’re souls to be shepherded. The biblical approach is to:
1. Deliver one clear message at a time
2. Confirm it was received as intended
3. Own our mistakes when we miss the mark
4. Choose connection over completion
As Kingdom Family Leaders, our relationships deserve our full presence. Whether with our children, wives, employees or community – leading like Jesus means choosing the eternal impact of love over the temporal pressure of tasks.
What message are you sending today? Is it the one you truly want received?
You be blessed!
