Top o’ the Mornin’ to Ya!
TLDR: Leadership often starts with simply showing up and taking action, even when you don’t feel like it. Learn how the powerful mindset of “say yes and take a step” can help Christian men break free from failure paralysis and create momentum in their leadership journey through family, business, and faith.
What?
I was standing at the bus stop just seconds ago thinking I hadn’t made a plan or strategy for today’s message. That’s when my mentor’s phrase came to mind: “Say yes and take a step.” This happens in our group coaching calls too – when someone raises their hand to share but isn’t sure what to say, they’re applying this same principle. They say yes first by raising their hand, take a step, and then something comes to mind for them to share.
Yesterday, I experienced a setback when my coaching Facebook group was shut down. I found alternative ways to do my outreach on Friday, but on Monday, I just didn’t follow through. This morning, I didn’t feel like doing anything, but applying the “say yes and take a step” mentality helped me pop up and do my workout anyway, rather than chaining multiple missed opportunities together.
Why?
I’m sharing this because as leaders, we’re examples seeking excellence. When we face setbacks or “learning opportunities” (what we often call failures), it’s tempting to stay down and let that negative momentum carry us through the day. But true leadership means breaking that pattern quickly and creating positive momentum instead.
Lesson
The 24-hour reset I often talk about is powerful, but as we get more fine-tuned as leaders, we should challenge ourselves to shorten that reset time. When you experience a win, celebrate it for less than 24 hours and keep winning—capture that momentum. When you experience a loss or learning opportunity, take less than 24 hours to pivot (or “shive it” as I accidentally coined) and apply that learning right away.
